Vining yellow grex summer squash was bred with the intention to be squash vine borer resistant. With that in mind, Esoteric Agriculture began selecting and crossing summer squash varieties that aggressively rooted at each node. Squash vine borer is a type of moth that lays its eggs at the base of squash plants. When the eggs hatch, the larvae burrow (or “bore”) into stems, this weakens or kills the plant. By selecting for rooting at nodes, the squash is able to have a better chance of survival when damaged by the borer. Phocas Seeds further selected and crossed in tender yellow squash varieties.
Plants have considerable variation in fruit shapes and appliance, but are all “yellow” in type. Plants will vine and need adequate space to grow. We suggest spacing plants like winter squash, with at least 2′ between each plant and at least 3-5′ between rows.
Direct sow after last frost, or start indoors 4 weeks before last frost.
