Cucurbita maxima
Heirloom
In 1833, members of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society in Northampton Massachusetts received seeds of ‘Autumnal Marrow’ squash, said to have come from Buffalo, New York.
Early descriptions of this variety mention the fruits weighting around 5 to 6 pounds. Due to selection, the fruit size has increased greatly since the mid 1900s and we harvested fruits ranging from 25 to 35 pounds. Fruits have yellow-orange to reddish-orange skin, and the flesh is orange, tender and fine-grained. During the 19th century this squash was referred to as a true pie squash and was commonly used as a table squash.
